How to Love Yourself More and Raise Your Self-esteem

Do you love yourself? What about liking yourself? Would you be friends with you? Do you know who you are? Are you aware of your strengths and do you believe in your abilities? Do you know where you could make improvements?

Your self-esteem is your overall sense of self-worth or person value. It can involve your beliefs about yourself, including your behaviours, emotions and appearance.

It is true that your childhood experiences have a significant impact on your level of self-esteem, but you have the ability to change and get a boost of self-love whenever you want to.

Test the following strategies to see if they will help you increase your sense of self-esteem.

 

Embrace Spirituality

For many people, their faith or spirituality defines who they are and their purpose in life.  You have a purpose and reason for being here on this planet. Connect with your God, the creator, the universe, your higher power, or whatever spirituality means to you.  Let your belief in something so much greater than us.  You are valuable and your life is precious. Respect your unique gifts. Be courageous enough to be authentic, share your true self with the world as this is the basis of real confidence.

  1. Meditate or pray. Create an environment that allows you to be quiet, relax and just BE.
  2. Be inspired. The more positivity and inspiration you can incorporate into your life, the more your life will become what you want to make it. Read or listen to affirmations, quotes and inspirational messages.
  3. Deepen your understanding through discussion. Talking with others can help you to clarify your thinking and even challenge any assumptions you may be making.

 

Recognize Your Accomplishments

Our actions either build us up or tear us down. When making decisions, consider if they will build your self-esteem.

  1. List your accomplishments. It is easy to cross something off of your to do list and move on. But it is important to celebrate your successes. They can get lost when we are mired in the day-to-day. Make a list of your accomplishments and add to it whenever you create, accomplish or achieve something. Read your list whenever you need a reminder of just how amazing you really are.
  2. Be in alignment. Ask yourself if your actions align with your values. What is it that you value? What truly matters to you? Do your actions support your core values?  Examine any actions or choices that create stress for you. Check to see if you’re really in alignment.
  3. Get uncomfortable. When you feel confident and capable you are able to do thing outside your comfort zone. Learning or doing something new requires you to be uncomfortable. Are you willing to be uncomfortable in order to grow?
  4. Perseverance. Nothing comes without struggle. Once you have decided to seek something that is of value to you, you need to be able to persevere and overcome the obstacles and setbacks that come with seeking. Believe you are capable of overcoming whatever you need to and you’ll be able to reach your goal.

 

Connection

 You have a choice of how you want to feel about yourself.  You are in control of our level of self-esteem and confidence.  How you connect with others can also strengthen your belief in yourself.

  1. Family. Family rituals that contribute to your sense of self-worth are worth cultivating. There are likely dynamics that are not supporting you that you may want to change so that they are more beneficial you and your family.
  2. Deepen your connections. Share with those you love and trust more than just what happened or what you are doing. Let others see into you by sharing your thoughts and feelings. Communicate at a deeper level and demonstrated that you respect the other person’s thoughts, beliefs and feelings.
  3. Unconditional love. Gain a new perspective by looking at yourself though the eyes of a dog. Dogs see their owners as wonderful and amazing beings. Spend some time playing with a dog (or cat). Studies have shown that pet owners tend to have higher self-esteem.

 

 

Accept yourself for who you are. The stronger your sense of self-worth, the more likely you are to make good decisions and achieve your goals.
