Make All Your Days Good Days

Greet the day with hopeEveryone has good days and bad. What would it be worth to you if you could eliminate most of the bad days from your life? It is possible. You have the ability to make good days the norm.

What constitutes a good day is really up to you. Maybe each day you’re alive could be considered a good day. Having food to eat or a place to sleep. Or, if your basic needs are met, having enough sleep or not being in pain. It’s up to you.

Consider what has to happen for you to label a day as “good”?

Create more good days with a few strategies:

1. Choose to have only good days. There are many opportunities to have a bad day. You might be running late or your car decides to break down. Someone might speak unkindly to you or you spill coffee on your shirt. Just because annoying things happen doesn’t mean you have to focus on them and everything negative about your day or your life. Don’t let a few minor mishaps prevent you from having a great day.

2. Choose to be happy, or at least content. In spite of whatever is going on, you get to choose your mood, so choose to be happy. If happiness seems to be too far away emotionally, choose to at least be content. Look for what’s good in each situation.

3. Spend time with someone you love. Being with someone who makes you happy in general can improve your mood. Few activities can realign your perspective back to reality more effectively than spending time with a loved one.

4. Be on time (or even early). Being late creates stress. It begins as soon as you realize that you’re running behind. It rarely ends until the day is over. If you’re late for one activity, you are likely going to be late for your next task or activity and the next. This domino can go on all day. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to keep your schedule intact.

5. Have a morning routine. If your start your day off well, you’ll find the rest of your day goes well. A morning routine is an effective way to get the day off to a positive start. An effective routine can include things like the time you wake up, a review of your prioritized to-do list, journaling, affirmations, exercise, and anything else you enjoy in the morning. Whatever your routine is, ensure that it enhances your day.

6. Try doing less. Having too much to do creates many challenges that get in the way of having a good day. Prioritize your to-do list and schedule to the most important 3-5 tasks. Focus on the important and urgent tasks. Reschedule the rest.

7. Complete your most important task first. Complete this task as early in the day as possible so that you can and give yourself time to accomplish even more. Knowing that you have accomplished something that matters will help you feel good about how your day is going.

8. Be grateful. Remembering all the great things in your life is a good way to lift your mood. Give yourself a few minutes to list all the positive people and circumstances in your life. If you are dealing with chronic illness, you can be grateful that you are as healthy as you are. Do you have friends and family? Do you have an income? No matter what you are going through, tour life is probably much better than you think! Consider listing those things that fill you with gratitude as part of your morning routine. Your attitude will be primed to have a good day.

Having a good day is relative. The worst day for a middle-class Canadian might be a great day for a child in a third-world country. You are the only one who can determine the quality of your day. Make the conscious decision to have a great day.
